Peppermint Patty Ingredients

  • Sweetened Condensed Milk - you will need 1 14-ounce can of sweetened condensed milk for this recipe. If you want to make these vegan, you can try and find canned coconut sweetened condensed milk.
  • Powdered Sugar - you will need between 6 and 6 ½ cups of powdered sugar. You’ll need to continue to add it until the dough forms a soft ball.
  • Peppermint Extract - depending on the brand of peppermint extract, you’ll want to add between 1 and 1 ½ teaspoons.
  • Dark Chocolate - make sure your chocolate is at least 60% or higher. If you use a bar of chocolate, chop it into pieces before melting. You could also use Guittard Chocolate Chips which are my favorite brand that’s easy to find at the grocery store.
  • Coconut Oil - adding a little of this to the melted chocolate keeps the chocolate slightly soft even when it has been chilled. You could substitute shortening or any kind of neutral oil like canola or vegetable oil.

How to Make Peppermint Patties

  1. Make the peppermint filling. In the bowl of a stand mixer, add the sweetened condensed milk, 1 teaspoon of the peppermint extract, and half of the powdered sugar. Mix until well combined. Slowly add the rest of powdered sugar until the dough resembles cookie dough and isn't very sticky, up to 6½ cups powdered sugar. Taste test the peppermint filling and add up to ½ teaspoon more the of peppermint extract.
  2. Roll into patties. Roll into 1" dough balls and place about 2" apart on a parchment or wax paper lined baking sheet. Use a flat cup or measuring cup to flatten the peppermint balls. (Spray with non-stick cooking spray if needed.) You could also roll out the dough until roughly ½” thick and cut into circles.
  3. Chill. Place the prepared peppermint patties in the fridge for about 20 minutes to harden.
  4. Melt the chocolate. Fill a medium saucepan with about 1” of water. Place a heat proof glass or aluminum bowl on top of the pan so it doesn't touch the water. Gently simmer the water. Add the chocolate and coconut oil to the bowl. Let the chocolate melt for a couple of minutes, then stir with a spatula. Continue to warm gently over the double boiler and stir occasionally until almost all of the chocolate is melted. Remove the chocolate from the heat allow it to cool slightly before dipping.
  5. Dip the candies. Using dipping forks (or regular forks!), dip each of the peppermint patties in the melted chocolate one at a time. After pulling the patty out of the chocolate, shake off the excess chocolate and scrape the bottom of the fork off on the side of the pan.
  6. Chill. Place the patty back on the parchment and let set for about 30 minutes. Store Peppermint Patties in a covered container in the fridge for up to 3 weeks. Enjoy!
